Qigong and my son

March 7, 2009

I know, with all the loads of stuff I could start my kid’s martial arts journey with, I start him with qigong?

But there’s a reason for that. When I started MY journey, that was how I started too. I started at 10 (or so) and the first thing I was taught was the qigong unique to Praying Mantis style. And when I saw that he was already quite tense for a 7 year old, I decided that I’ve got to get him started on this.

So I did.

When it comes to martial arts stuff, I’m very serious. I don’t fool around. Jess is quite used to me taking things easy, so he was clowning around at the very beginning.

I was pissed off! I told him “If you are not serious, I’ll NOT teach you!”

He instantly sobered up.

Then I said “Very simple. You get to choose: either we just stop here now and I don’t teach you this tonight; OR I cane you and after that I continue to teach you this stuff. What do you prefer?”

He looked me straight in the eye and said “The cane!” Darn, I’m so proud of him! How can I bear to cane him after that? šŸ™‚

So it’s been a few weeks since we started. Yeah, his form isn’t perfect yet, but I can tell he’s benefiting from the exercises. I can see on his face that once he starts he’s in that state of relaxed concentration, the Zone, they call it. And he loves it.

There’s of course other stuff to teach him, and I’ve been adding little things here and there (like the wheelbarrow exercise to strengthen his upper body). But it’s heartwarming to see him enjoy the qigong stuff. It was what I least expected him to enjoy, so it was a pleasant surprise when he enjoyed it. šŸ™‚
