Knuckle Push-ups

I did 10 knuckle push-ups every night for the last few nights. OWWW!!!

Justyn, my sensei, has been emphasizing in class that using a clenched fist to strike someone on the head may not be a cunning plan. It works only if you get the softer parts (like the face, for example).

Problem is, a lot of the head is hard bone. And the hand is made up of many small, little bones. Think of trying to hit someone wearing a motorcycle helmet. That won’t be too far off the mark.

So based on that I’ve got two options. One is to totally retrain myself to strike with an open palm. The other is to try to condition my fist a tad bit so I won’t break my hand and mess up my piano-playing career just because I need to clout someone in the face.

I chose the second one.

The last time I did knuckle push-ups regularly was when I was 15-16 years old. That was more than half a lifetime ago. Knuckling down to it really made me feel like a teenager again, bringing me back to the days when I was a praying mantis enthusiast with more energy than I can even imagine now.

Is this part of ‘official’ Bujinkan training? I don’t think so, since the Shihan in Japan don’t do it. But what the heck, it’s not gonna kill me (or mess up my piano skills) and it makes me feel just a little safer with my hands, right?
